Antipoverty activists protest government's bastardry
The government has decided to starve us in its upcoming budget. Today, unemployed workers and their allies are making a stand against this needless cruelty.
Today, at 12:30pm (ACDT), unemployed workers, welfare recipients, and their allies are protesting the Australian government’s cruel decision to dump millions of people in poverty.
To mark the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty, a group of protestors will gather in Adelaide — the home town of Social Services Minister Amanda Rishworth — to demand an immediate increase of all income support to the Henderson Poverty Line.
Activists will also be gathering outside Newcastle Centrelink, while a strong contingent of online supporters will be making their voices heard all across the country.
Together, we are united in our desire to break the poverty machine (#BTPM). We want to abolish the system of mutual obligations that torments us and jeopardises our income. We want to stop private job providers, like Sarina Russo, from profiting and leeching off our misery.
We don’t want to be sacrificed — starved and evicted from our homes — for the sake of the budget bottom line. We want to be able to live and contribute to our society.
By dumping us in poverty during a cost-of-living crisis, the government has given us no choice but to protest. Our lives are on the line.
